After a recent surgery, I found myself looking for things to keep stress down and a good attitude up. I found exactly that when I picked up my step-daughter’s guitar and decided to learn acoustic guitar songs while I healed from surgery.
At 45 years old, I was surprised to find a free, easy, fun, and healthy hobby that had similar emotional, mental and physical rewards to exercise (with the exception of the calorie burning part). I was even more amazed to learn about the healing power of music and the many benefits of music therapy.
Use YouTube Videos to Learn the Basics in a Month
I am obviously no Jimmy Hendrix. However, within a month I learned read standard notation sheet music, all standard notes, a few chords, and several cool songs. More importantly, I was having fun and that makes everything else easier.
I did this by, watching the following four YouTube Videos. I played only a half hour at a time; two to four times a week. I’ve embedded them in this post and hope you enjoy them as much as I have. I’ve also added some videos I found after learning what I know today and will place those after the four I used.
